ICJ calls on military to withdraw threat of coup d’état and respect the rule of law
The ICJ today called on the Fijian military to withdraw the threat of a coup d’état and for the Government and military to resolve the current impasse through democratic means that respects the rule of law.

El Instituto de Estudios Legales y Sociales del Uruguay, organización uruguaya afiliada a la CIJ, organizará un seminario sobre “Acceso a la Justicia y Administración de Justicia” el 4 de diciembre en Montevideo, Uruguay.
El seminario estará auspiciado por el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD) y la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (OACDH) y contará con la participación de expertos nacionales e internacionales sobre la materia.

Sri Lanka: human rights and humanitarian crisis continues; must be scrutinized
The ICJ today called on member states of the United Nations Human Rights Council to closely scrutinize the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.
The ICJ renewed its call for the establishment of a fully-fledged human rights operation in the country.
“There is little neutral space left in Sri Lanka. Civilians are suffering the human rights and humanitarian consequences of a deepening conflict and unaccountable armed forces on all sides”, said the ICJ.

The ICJ today urged the Interim Government of Thailand to ratify the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court.
Russia: ICJ Commissioner Karinna Moskalenko honoured with annual human rights award of the International Helsinki Federation (IHF)
Karinna Moskalenko, a leading human rights advocate from the Russian Federation and ICJ Commissioner, was awarded the annual recognition award of the International Helsinki Federation.
The award was formally presented to Karinna Moskalenko during the General Assembly of the International Helsinki Federation in Sofia on November 16, 2006.
The International Helsinki Federation noted in its presentation of the award, that “Karinna Moskalenko is among the most outstanding human rights lawyers in the world, who has helped scores of victims in Russia fight for their rights in court. (…)
Karinna Moskalenko has insisted that Russian citizens have access to international standards of justice and has helped bring their cases to the European Court of Human Rights.
Her moral and intellectual powers and her humanistic personality are her gift, but also one to her society. That gift deserves recognition, not persecution.”
