The ICJ is honored to announce the election of Professor Pedro Nikken as ICJ President. A member of the Commission since several years, he was elected ICJ President on 21 January 2011.
Pedro Nikken succeeds Mary Robinson who served in the role from 2008 – 2010. He is a former Judge (1979-1989) and President (1983-1985) of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. He served as UN Independent Expert on El Salvador from 1992 to 1995 and from 1990-1992 he served as Legal Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on El Salvador’s peace process.
In 1995 he served as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Burundi. He is former Dean and Professor (emeritus) at the Law School of the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He is also former President and Permanent Counselor of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights. He is a Member (Chair N° 9) of the Venezuelan National Academy of Political and Social Sciences.
He is currently serving his third term as ICJ Commissioner.

The ICJ is organizing two-day trial observation training seminars on 14-15 March in Nizhniy Novgorod.
The seminar will aim to provide practical skills on how to conduct trial observations, assess and analyze information and data obtained, and draft a final trial observation report.
The seminar will address general legislative frameworks within which courts operate; the compliance with international rule of law and human rights standards; the components and guarantees of the right to fair trial; observing proceedings within the courtroom and the conduct of meetings with the relevant authorities and other advocacy work outside the courtroom.
Eligibility criteria:
- Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in the rule of law and human rights law;
- Applicants must have an interest in international standards of fair trial;
- Applicants must demonstrate an interest in observing trials or working on trial observation projects;
Closing date for applications: 15 February 2011.
