Today, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the Nationwide Movement “Yuksalish” and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) are holding an International Public Discussion entitled “From Legislation to Action: Effective Measures for Protecting Women and Children from Violence in Uzbekistan”. The event is organized within the framework of “Enhancing the Quality of Uzbekistan’s Application of international Law (EQUAL)”, project funded by the European Union.

Today, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) and the Nationwide Movement “Yuksalish,” in cooperation with the National Centre for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan, are holding an International Public Discussion on monitoring and coordination of implementation of the UN human rights treaties in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a party to most of the principal human rights treaties, but the UN Committees that review compliance of States with obligations those treaties have identified a number of shortcomings in the country’s implementation and have recommended what needs to be done ensure better compliance.

Today, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) in cooperation with the Supreme School of Judges (SSJ) are organizing a training workshop on international law and standards on economic, social and cultural rights for judges and lawyers in Samarkand in the framework of EU-funded project “Enhancing the Quality of Uzbekistan’s Application of international Law (EQUAL)”.

International human rights law and standards, including on economic, social and cultural rights, should become a governing framework for the ongoing programme of reforms in Uzbekistan, said the ICJ in its submission to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). Reforms should aim at ensuring compliance with international law obligations, including on issues of equality and non-discrimination, housing, healthcare, labour rights, access to justice and remedies in cases of violations of ESC rights.
