
ICJ concerned at Israel’s use of collective punishment

On 26 August, the High Court of Justice of Israel heard the beginning of oral arguments by lawyers for Kifah and Intisar Ajuri and Abdel Nasser Asida. The three petitioners are relatives of persons accused by Israel of having carried out acts of terrorism.
The ICJ applauded the decision yesterday by the United Nations Economic and Social Council to adopt a treaty aimed at preventing torture. Its adoption has been a strong priority for the ICJ.
The ICJ and JUSTICE, its Hong Kong Section, are concerned over the methods used by immigration and police officers to effect removal from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of right of abode claimants.
Today the ICJ welcomed with enormous satisfaction yesterday’s decision by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to adopt a new international instrument to prevent torture.
