ICJ submission to the universal periodic review of Indonesia

Under the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on the UPR will be undertaking a review of Indonesia during its 13th session in June 2012.

In a submission to the Working Group, the International Commission of Jurists has focused on the discrete issues of: the recently enacted State Intelligence Law; and Indonesia’s party status to international human rights instruments and its cooperation with the UN treat bodies and the Council’s Special Procedures.

Lettre d’appui aux poursuites privées intentées contre George W. Bush pour torture

La CIJ et d’autres groupes défenseurs des droits humains ont rédigé une lettre au procureur général du Canada pour soutenir les poursuites privées intentées contre l’ancien président des Etats-unis Geaorge W. Bush.

Ces plaintes ont été déposées au nom de trois anciens détenus de Guantánamo et d’un encore en détention, qui allèguent avoir été torturés et maltraités par des fonctionnaires américains.

Letter in support of private prosecutions filed against George W. Bush for torture

The ICJ and other human rights groups wrote a letter to the Canadian Attorney General in support of the private prosecutions against former US President George W. Bush.

These were lodged on behalf of three former Guantánamo detainees and one current detainee, who allege that they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment by U.S. Officials.

A decade since un security council resolution 1373: ten lessons learnt on counter-terrorism and human rights

28 September 2011 marks the ten year anniversary of the adoption by the UN Security Council of its resolution 1373 concerning measures to combat terrorism, which resulted in a proliferation of counter-terrorism legislation.

In a statement delivered that day to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe during its annual Human Dimension Implementation Meeting, the ICJ’s Dr Alex Conte identified ten key lessons learnt over the last decade of focused attention on the countering of terrorism and the relationship this has had with national, regional and international human rights law.

Libya: unarmed civilians must be protected

The ICJ today called on the Libyan authorities to immediately end the ongoing gross human rights violations committed by security forces and pro-government militia against the civilian population in Libya.

The ICJ also urged the international community to take robust measures to end the deadly attacks against Libyan demonstrators and to ensure the immediate protection of civilians.
