Report on appellate hearings on lawyer Muhamed Mugraby

The ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers concluded in its report today that the appellate hearings on Lebanese human rights lawyer, Muhamad Mugraby, were not in accordance with international standards.

The ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers monitored the proceedings which took place on 15 October 2003 at the 12th Appellate Panel of the Civil Court of Beirut.

In its report released today, the ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers expressed its concern that Turkish lawyers continue to face criminal prosecution for exercising their right to freedom of expression.

This is the final report of the trial of Filiz Kalayci, a Turkish lawyer, who was charged with “insulting the Ministry of Justice” and “professional misconduct” on account of an article that she wrote in a national newspaper regarding F-Type prisons in Turkey.
