Nepali legislators should reject problematic provisions of the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) bill introduced in parliament on April 9, 2014, said Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the ICJ.

ICJ submission on Thailand to the UN Committee against Torture

The ICJ has submitted an alternative report in advance of the Committee against Torture examination of Thailand’s initial report under the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The ICJ submission draw’s the Committee’s attention to concerns related to:

  • Security laws in Thailand providing for enlarged executive powers of administrative detention without adequate judicial supervision;
  • The failure by Thai authorities to prosecute perpetrators of torture or ill-treatment; and
  • The failure by authorities to prevent, investigate and prosecute gender-based violence.

The Committee will examine Thailand’s initial report during its 52nd session held in April to May 2014, following which it will adopt Concluding Observations setting out recommendations to the Government.

The ICJ expressed concern at today’s decision by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to dismiss the challenge by Lena Hendry, programme coordinator of the human rights advocacy organization Pusat Komas, to the constitutionality of elements of the Film Censorship Act 2002.
