The ICJ in its intervention of 10 March 2008 appreciated the Working Group’s recent revision of its working methods to better assist families in determining the fate or whereabouts of their family members who are reportedly disappeared.

The ICJ also expressed its concern at the high rate of disappearances in Sri Lanka, where 58 new cases of enforced disappearances were reported in 2007, while 5,516 cases remained pending. Ahead of the fourth anniversary of the enforced disappearance of human rights lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit (photo) in Thailand, the ICJ urged the Thai Government to ensure that independent investigations continue and evidence is carefully preserved and witnesses protected.
