In a submission to the UN Human Rights Committee in advance of its forthcoming examination of Egypt’s fifth periodic report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the ICJ highlights several ongoing concerns with respect to the country’s implementation of and compliance with the provisions of the ICCPR, including in relation to:
- Egyptian authorities’ implementation of the right to life and the prevalence of torture and other ill-treatment
- Systematic practice of enforced disappearance
- Abusive use of pre-trial detention, and the poor treatment of persons deprived of their liberty
- The administration of justice, right to a fair trial and independence of the judiciary
The submission is relevant for the Committee’s evaluation of Egypt’s implementation of the State’s obligations and related Covenant rights under articles 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16 and 19 of the ICCPR.
The Human Rights Committee will examine Egypt’s fifth periodic report during its 137th session, from 27 February to 24 March 2023.
