The ICJ has made a submission to the UN Human Rights Committee in advance of its forthcoming examination of Israel’s fifth periodic report under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
In its submission, the ICJ highlights a number of ongoing concerns with respect to the country’s implementation of and compliance with the provisions of the ICCPR, including in relation to:
- The establishment and expansion of settlements in, and the annexation of portions of, the Occupied Palestinian Territory;
- Excessive use of force in the context of Israel’s response to the “Great March of Return” in Gaza; and
- The accountability gaps within the Israeli military justice system.
The submission is relevant for the Committee’s evaluation of Israel’s implementation of the State’s obligations and related Covenant rights under articles 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 17, 18, 21 and 26.
The Human Rights Committee will examine Israel’s fifth periodic report during its 134th session, which will be held in Geneva from 28 February to 25 March 2022.
