The independence of the judiciary in India: report of a seminar held in New Delhi on 20 and 21 January 1990

On 20 – 21 January 1990, the ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers organised, in collaboration with the United Nations Centre for Human Rights, a seminar on the Independence of the Judiciary in India in New Delhi. The seminar was convened by the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the CIJL, the former Chief Justice of India, P.N. Bhagwati.

This report contains some of the presentations made to the seminar, the conclusions and recommendations, and two important documents which were examined and endorsed at the meeting: the United Nations Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary and the Bangalore Principles on the Domestic Implementation of International Human Rights Norms.
