The Constitution of Mongolia provides for an independent judiciary. The General Council of Courts, established to promote the independence of the judiciary, has far-reaching powers with regard to the selection and removal of judges.
The General Council is headed by the executive, an arrangement with adverse implications for the independence of the judiciary. There have been incidents reported concerning attempts by members of the executive to influence the judiciary.
