On 27 January 2000, the new Musharaf government gave instructions to judges in Pakistan to take a fresh oath of allegiance to the unconstitutional army-led administration.

Chief Justice Said-uz Zaman Siddiqi and about 20 other judges, including five Supreme Court judges, have refused to take the new oath. Harsh measures were taken against these judges and the Chief Justice himself was replaced.

The ICJ is aware of at least 34 judges and lawyers who were murdered in Pakistan during the last three years.
