The Nairobi Declaration was developed by the ICJ in partnership with African OPDs at a conference held in Nairobi in May 2025. It was launched during the proceedings of the 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights in October 2025.
The Declaration identifies common legal and practical barriers – some of which are structural and systemic – that impede effective access to justice for persons with disabilities in Africa. The Declaration also includes recommendations for States to ensure their compliance with their legal obligations to persons with disabilities, as well as a call to action for all stakeholders – including OPDs, public officials and various private entities.
The following organizations have formally endorsed the Declaration on the Right to Access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities, developed under the leadership of the ICJ in collaboration with partner OPDs:
- African Albinism Network
- African Disability Forum (ADF)
- Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN)
- Associations of Persons with Disabilities in Malawi (APDM)
- Disability Rights Watch (DRW) 6. Luwero District Disabled Women Association (LUDDWA)
- Mental Health Users Network of Zambia (MHUNZ)
- TCI Global – Transforming Communities for Inclusion (TCI)
- United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK)
