Despite the existence of constitutional and legal provisions guaranteeing the independence of the judiciary, the executive continues to exercise improper interference in the judicial domain.

A number of political trials have reportedly been conducted without regard to the legal rights of defence and due legal process.

Human right defenders, including lawyers have been subjected to harassment and intimidation.
