The ICJ today called on States to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions against Myanmar military in a statement before the UN Human Rights Council.
The statement could not be delivered due to the limited time provided for NGO Statements.
The statement reads as follows:
“Mr President
The ICJ appreciates the focus on the devastating situation of the human rights of children in Myanmar.
As the Special Rapporteur highlights in his report, there are widespread violations of children’s economic, social and cultural rights, The ICJ deplores the arbitrary detention of the nearly 200 children who are being detained for political reasons. These child prisoners are being treated as adults, held without access to a lawyer or family members, and in an environment where torture and cruel inhuman and degrading treatment is commonplace, in violation of their rights under the CRC.
Persons detained for political reasons often face summary trials in military courts, who frequently impose the death penalty, all in the absence of fair trial guarantees.
As previous calls on the junta have gone unanswered, the international community must take action to hold those responsible for violations accountable.
The ICJ echoes the calls of the Special Rapporteur and urges the Member States of the Council to act swiftly and decisively in a coordinated manner by imposing an arms embargo and targeted economic sanctions against the Myanmar military, in addition to calling on the UN Security Council to refer the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court.
