Human Rights Council: UN human rights experts are scheduled to present their joint study on global practices of secret detention in the context of countering terrorism.
The ICJ is disappointed by the decision of the UN Human Rights Council to defer the discussion of a global study on secret detention, torture and enforced disappearances in the name of counter-terrorism in 80 countries.
The ICJ yesterday briefed the members of the UN Security Council on the impact of counter-terrorism policies on human rights and on ways to re-affirm and integrate human rights into the UN.

The ICJ is pleased to announce that Justice Azhar Cachalia will observe the trial in the matter of The State versus Roy L Bennett in the High Court of Zimbabwe.
Mr. Bennett is charged with the possession of weapons with the intention to commit sabotage, terrorism, banditry and insurgency. He had earlier been charged with treason but this was dropped. Initially he was charged with contravening section 25 of the Immigration Act requiring persons getting out of Zimbabwe to present themselves before an Immigration officer but this charge was thrown out by court at the initial remand proceedings.

The ICJ wants that alternative to detention become the cornerstone of every migration policy.
In a statement at the UN Human Rights Council Panel on Human Rights of Migrants in detention centres, the ICJ drew attention to the fact that States increasingly treat migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, as a potential threat to state security, and automatically subject them to measures such as administrative detention.
