The ICJ sent today a cable to the Chief Justice of Sudan to support the action engaged by the Sudanese Judges “in protest against interference of the Executive in judicial matters”.
The text of the telegram is as follows:
The International Commission of Jurists has just learned that the Sudanese judges are on strike “in protest against interference of the Executive in Judicial matters”
We deeply respect your courageous action to protect the independence of the judiciary which is guaranteed by the Sudan Constitution.
Respect for the independence of the Judiciary is essential to preserve the rights of the citizen and the supremacy of the rule of law. We are fully supporting your action and offer our respectful congratulations.
