Dec 23, 2021 | Advocacy, News

The ICJ launches today a series of videos on access to justice challenges in cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in Peru, Colombia and Guatemala; the videos also include recommendations to each State on urgent measures to take to fight against impunity for these crimes. The videos were produced as part of the project “Promoting justice for extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in Colombia, Guatemala and Peru”, supported by the European Union.

The videos, produced by Volut agency, also chart some milestones in the countries’ history related to their armed conflicts, and about their respective legal frameworks addressing the investigation and prosecution of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

Additionally, the ICJ conducted a number of interviews focusing on the existing international human rights standards for the investigation of enforced disappearances and unlawful deaths. The interviews featured several topics, including the Méndez Principles; the Minnesota Protocol; and the Guiding Principles for the Search for Disappeared Persons; as well as the general context in Latin America regarding the search for disappeared persons and the right to reparation.

The list of interviewees included: Verónica Hinestroza, Senior Legal Advisor at Fair Trials; María Clara Galvis, Professor of Law at the Externado University of Colombia and member of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances between 2015 and 2019; Carlos Mauricio López Cárdenas, Professor at the Universidad del Rosario; and Mónica Barriga Pérez, Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
