The ICJ expresses its serious concern at the unlawful detention, prosecution and conviction of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, a Malawian gay couple.
The ICJ calls for the sentence against them to be unconditionally reviewed and their conviction immediately overturned.

The most visible example of oppression on the grounds of sexual orientation is the continued criminalization of sexual activity between consenting adult partners of the same sex in many states around the world.
Regardless of whether they are enforced, these so-called sodomy laws have the effect of stigmatizing an entire group of people as criminal. International law on the issue is clear. Such laws violate human rights. In this ICJ Briefing Paper, we analyze the application of international human rights law to the criminalization of same-sex sexual conduct.

The ICJ expresses deep concern and regrets the violence and associated loss of life in Bangkok on the evening of 10 April 2010.
We send our deepest condolences to the families of all those who were killed during these events, and urge all parties and individuals to pursue peaceful solutions to the current political conflict. The ICJ believes that peaceful reconciliation will be best served if all those involved respect the rule of law and comply with international standards, especially those relating to the use of force, full and transparent investigations into alleged human rights violations, and protection of fundamental rights including freedom of expression. In this public statement the ICJ highlights the content of these long-standing and widely accepted international standards.

Entre los días 22 y 26 de marzo la CIJ llevó a cabo una misión de alto nivel en Guatemala con el fin de observar el proceso de elección de Fiscal General. Durante la visita, la delegación de la CIJ mantuvo reuniones con los distintos actores involucrados en el proceso y con organizaciones de la sociedad civil enfocadas hacia la administración de justicia, en las que intercambió impresiones con sus interlocutores y procuró dar difusión a los estándares internacionales contenidos en las Directrices de Naciones Unidas sobre la función de los fiscales aprobadas por consenso por la Asamblea General, específicamente lo relativo al numeral primero que establece que “las personas designadas como fiscales serán personas probas e idóneas, con formación y calificaciones adecuadas”.
