Civil society actors discussed how to bring Thai law and practices in compliance with international law and standards, and enhance their engagement with the UN human rights mechanisms, in a workshop organized by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), in cooperation with ARTICLE 19, between 21 and 22 October 2022 in the province of Khon Kaen, in the country’s Northeast.
“States must take steps to strengthen access to justice for victims of extraterritorial corporate human rights harms in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam (‘CLMTV’)”, according to dozens of human rights lawyers from the Mekong Region at a Workshop hosted by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and EarthRights International on 8 and 9 September 2022 in Bangkok.
“Laws, policies and practices in Thailand must be reviewed and amended in order to remove obstacles to holding Thai companies accountable for wrongdoing outside the country’s borders and ensure their alignment with Thailand’s obligations under international human rights law”, justice sector officials concluded at a workshop hosted by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and Thailand’s Ministry of Justice on 10 and 11 September 2022.
Cases of alleged human rights abuses by Thai companies operating abroad are not being effectively investigated, according to participants at a consultative dialogue between human rights lawyers from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and representatives of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) and Thailand’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP) Implementation Monitoring Sub-Committee on 9 September 2022.
The draft Second National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (2023-2027) (NAP), now being considered in a public hearing (2 August to 19 September), must be reviewed to ensure its consistency with international standards and effective implementation, urged participants of the online discussion organized by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and partners on 18 and 19 September 2022.
