On 17 May US immigration authorities arrested Luis Posada Carriles for illegally entering the country. Venezuela requested Posada’s extradition as he escaped from a local jail while awaiting trial in 1985. Mr. Posada is accused of masterminding the blowing-up of a Cuban airliner off Barbados in 1976 which killed 73 people and of plotting to assassinate Fidel Castro.
