At the 55th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) addressed dire human rights situations requiring the Council’s attention, calling for increased resources for the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the establishment of an international independent investigation mechanism in Libya.

Emphasizing widespread violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Israel since October 7, 2023, the ICJ urged the Council to allocate significant additional resources for investigations conducted by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.

The ICJ also underscored the need for independent scrutiny in Libya, where authorities and armed groups are continuing to commit serious crimes under international law and violate the human rights of activists and civil society. Highlighting the Derna catastrophe in particular, the ICJ called on the Council to establish an international independent investigative mechanism for Libya.
