ICJ Submission to the universal periodic review of Burundi

The ICJ drew Council’s attention to the continuous gross and systematic violations of human rights in Burundi.

These include extra-judicial executions, arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment and harassment of peaceful opposition, which are compounded by the persistent impunity of their perpetrators.

The ICJ called on the Council to recommend to the Government of Burundi to re-establish the rule of law and ensure the full enjoyment of human rights, in particular of those expressing peaceful criticism and dissenting opinions or exercising opposition political activity.
