The Egyptian authorities must open an independent and impartial investigation into allegations of serious human rights violations perpetrated against detainees at the Badr prison complex and ensure that those responsible be held accountable, said the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) today.

On 4 April, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted resolution 52/L.33 on “Technical assistance and capacity-building to improve human rights in Libya” that fails to establish a mechanism to follow-up on the work of the UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission (FFM). The 52nd session of the HRC marked the end of the FFM’s mandate.
The ICJ reiterated today its urgent call on UN Member States to establish a mechanism for missing and disappeared people in Syria on the occasion of the interactive dialogue with the Commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic.
The ICJ denounced today the ongoing civil society crackdown through Egypt’s abuse of counter-terrorism measures at the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism.
The Lebanese authorities must remove all obstacles impeding the investigation into the Beirut Port Blast on 4 August 2020, and ensure that any related disputes be resolved in compliance with rule of law principles and through legally established procedures, the International Commission of Jurists said today.
