Today, the United Nations announced that the Global Coalition of Civil Society, Indigenous Peoples, Social Movements, and Local Communities for the Universal Recognition of the Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment will be one of the recipients of the prestigious award bestowed every five years to celebrate the outstanding contribution to select individuals and human rights organizations.

On 18 July 2023, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and the Extra-Territorial Obligation Watch Coalition (ETO Watch Coalition) filed a joint submission to the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) ahead of its review of China’s human rights record in early 2024.

“The evaluation of Thailand’s Eastern Special Development Zone Act B.E. 2561 (2018) (‘EEC Act’) in 2024 must be carried out with meaningful participation from all stakeholders, and ensure compliance with Thailand’s international human rights obligations,” concluded participants at a dialogue hosted by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Land Watch Thai, EEC Watch, and ENLAW Thai Foundation on 8 June 2023 in Bangkok.

The economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) guaranteed in Nepal’s Constitution are enforceable in Nepal’s courts, which routinely apply international human rights law and standards, including the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Nevertheless, Nepali lawyers have bemoaned the authorities’ failure – as elsewhere in the world – to execute and implement court orders and judgments.

Today, the International Commission of Jurists, Amnesty International, the Global Initiative for Economic and Social Rights and Human Rights Watch published a joint public statement calling for a strengthening of human rights elements in the World Health Organization (WHO) Intergovernmental Negotiating Body’s Zero Draft of a Pandemic Treaty. The organizations are concerned that without such revisions, the Treaty aimed at addressing a compelling public health and human rights challenge, will not be fit for purpose in the protection human rights.
