Joint statement on asylum seekers’ right to liberty in EU asylum law

The ICJ joined another 165 NGOs in an appeal to EU institutions to respect the right to liberty of asylum seekers in the negotations of the new Common European Asylum System.

The ICJ joined other 165 international, European and national NGOs in an appeal to EU institutions to to maintain the presumption against detention in EU asylum legislation and uphold as a minimum a list of essential safeguards on the detention of asylum seekers in EU asylum legislation, on occasion of the negotiations for the revision of the Common European Asylum System.

Joint declaration to the Brighton Conference on Reform of the European Court of Human Rights

The ICJ and other NGOs delivered a joint statement at the UK Brighton Conference on the Reform of the European Court of Human Rights.

Amnesty International, the AIRE Centre, the British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR), the European Human Rights Advocacy Centre (EHRAC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Human Rights Watch, INTERIGHTS, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), JUSTICE, Open Society Justice Initiative and REDRESS jointly delivered a statement on their views on the declaration on reform of the European Court of Human Rights under negotiation at Brighton (UK) under the UK Presidency of the Council of Europe.

Passing of Professor Antonio Cassese

It was with great sadness that the ICJ learned today of the passing of Professor Antonio Cassese who died this weekend at the age of 74 following a long fight with illness.

Professor Cassese was an Honorary Member of the ICJ having previously served as an ICJ Commissioner between 1995 and 2005. He was a distinguished figure in international justice, serving in a number of significant legal roles, and held the position of Professor of International Law at the University of Florence from 1975 until 2008.

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.

Pedro Nikken elected new ICJ President

PEDRO NIKKENThe ICJ is honored to announce the election of Professor Pedro Nikken as ICJ President. A member of the Commission since several years, he was elected ICJ President on 21 January 2011.

Pedro Nikken succeeds Mary Robinson who served in the role from 2008 – 2010. He is a former Judge (1979-1989) and President (1983-1985) of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. He served as UN Independent Expert on El Salvador from 1992 to 1995 and from 1990-1992 he served as Legal Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on El Salvador’s peace process.

In 1995 he served as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Burundi. He is former Dean and Professor (emeritus) at the Law School of the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He is also former President and Permanent Counselor of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights. He is a Member (Chair N° 9) of the Venezuelan National Academy of Political and Social Sciences.

He is currently serving his third term as ICJ Commissioner.
