The ICJ Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers (CIJL) acts as a focal point and centre of expertise within the ICJ to advance the independence of lawyers, judges and prosecutors.
The ICJ is concerned by a recent series of attacks on lawyers in Kyrgyzstan, and called on the government to take urgent steps to ensure the security of lawyers, defendants and other participants in criminal proceedings.
The ICJ and other human rights groups and defenders today condemned the continued detention without charge or trial of human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh in Iran.
They called for her immediate and unconditional release as she is held solely in connection with her work defending others.

An ICJ delegation visited Maldives to assess progress towards the establishment of an independent, impartial, and competent judiciary, and make recommendations.
The ICJ urged collaboration by all political parties and authorities to support the consolidation of an independent, impartial, and competent judiciary. The delegation noted remaining challenges in this regard as well as steps to take the process beyond recent controversies.

The ICJ is organizing two-day trial observation training seminars on 4-5 October in Moscow and 7-8 October in Saint Petersburg.
The seminar aims to provide practical skills on how to conduct trial observations, how to assess and analyse information and data obtained, and how to draft a final trial observation report.
The seminar will address the legislative frameworks within which courts operate, including:
Participants will be introduced to international standards of trial observations with a special focus on judicial independence.
