The 9th World Day Against the Death Penalty will focus on the inhumanity of the death penalty as a cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and punishment.
ICJ Kenya Mombasa Round table series on strengthening human rights protection in Africa
The Kenyan Section of the ICJ and other human rights institutions will be convening the Third Roundtable on strengthening the African human rights system in Mombasa, Kenya from 20 – 21 October 2011.
Parallel event at the HRC on “the role of judges and lawyers in times of crisis”
On 31 May, the ICJ organized a parallel event at the Human Rights Council on “The Role of Judges and Lawyers in Times of Crisis”.
The panel comprised the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers Gabriela Knaul, Carlos Ayala (former Chairman of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) and Gerritjan van Oven (President, Judges for Judges); ICJ Legal & Policy Director Ian Seiderman moderated the discussion. The speakers addressed the special role to be played by judges and lawyers in times of crisis, as last line of defense against the exercise of arbitrary power by political, military and other actors. The meeting also marked the publication of the Legal Commentary to the ICJ Geneva Declaration on Upholding the Rule of Law and the Role of Judges and Lawyers in Times of Crisis.

Europe: NGOs’ perspective on the EU accession to the ECHR
The ICJ and other NGOs submitted written comments to the informal group on accession of the European Union to the European Convention on Human Rights on the occasion of its meeting of 6-8 December 2010.
The NGO paper addressed the proposed co-respondent mechanism of the European Court of Human Rights and consultation with civil society on EU accession to the European Convention on Human Rights.

Europe: Fees – a Barrier to Justice
The ICJ and other human rights groups published a paper raising concerns at proposals being considered in the Council of Europe to impose fees on applicants to the European Court of Human Rights.
