The ICJ and other human rights groups made written submissions in the case of Lautsi v Italy before the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.
The case concerns the display of the crucifix in classrooms in state schools. The intervention analyses the jurisprudence of national courts and international tribunals regarding the state endorsement or promotion of religion in education, in light of rights to education and freedom of religion or belief protected by Article 2 of Protocol 1 and Article 9 ECHR, and considers how these principles may be applied to the official display of religious symbols in the classroom.
