The ICJ applauds the signing of four executive orders by President Barack Obama aimed to reverse some of the most abusive policies and practices instituted by the previous administration in its “war on terror”.
“The new administration has taken as among its first order of business a process of restoring the rule of law to its counter-terrorism programs”, said Wilder Tayler, Acting ICJ Secretary General. “These steps should initiate a full repeal or revision of the laws, policies and practices that had such a corrosive effect on human rights and the rule of law both domestically and globally. It should also encourage other States to help bring arbitrary detention at Guantanamo to an end, including by accepting detainees for resettlement.”

The ICJ today expressed its grave concern at the murder in Moscow yesterday of prominent human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and called for a thorough, prompt and independent criminal investigation.

La CIJ anunció hoy que emprenderá una misión de observación de la elección, por parte del Congreso de la República, de los magistrados que integrarán la Corte Suprema de Justicia.

La CIJ anunció hoy que emprenderá una misión de observación de la elección, por parte del Congreso de la República, de los magistrados que integrarán la Corte Suprema de Justicia.
Dicha misión se enmarca dentro del proceso de acompañamiento que la CIJ comenzó en septiembre y que incluyó dos visitas al país. La misión se desarrollará entre los días 21 y 25 de enero y tendrá como objetivo observar el respeto de los estándares internacionales relativos a la administración de justicia, que requieren el nombramiento de magistrados independientes e imparciales.
Durante la visita, se llevarán a cabo reuniones con los distintos actores involucrados en el proceso, principalmente la Junta Nominadora y el Congreso, responsable último de los nombramientos. La misión estará integrada por Ramón Cadena, Director de la Oficina en Centroamérica de la CIJ, José Zeitune, Consejero Jurídico para Latinoamérica de la CIJ, y Katya Salazar, Directora de Programas de la Fundación para el Debido Proceso Legal (DPLF por sus siglas en inglés).
La misión se enmarca dentro de las distintas actividades de observación del proceso de nombramiento que la CIJ ha implementado desde el inicio del mismo. A tal fin, se emprendieron dos misiones de alto nivel con expertos internacionales y se realizaron distintos pronunciamientos, disponibles en el sitio web de la CIJ.

The ICJ today called for an immediate end to the 12-day Israeli Military operations in Gaza that have claimed lives of more than 660 and wounded some 3.000 Palestinians.
Nine Israelis have also been killed during these operations. Many of the victims have been civilians.
“Palestinian civilians continue to pay the heaviest toll in operations that appear replete with violations of international humanitarian law”,” said the ICJ. “Many attacks have been indiscriminate or disproportionate, and Israel has failed in its legal obligation to take constant care to spare civilians and civilian objects from attack.
