The ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers expresses in its second report its deep concern at the on-going trial of 27 Turkish lawyers who are charged with professional misconduct related to their defense of political prisoners.
This preliminary report reflects the concerns of the ICJ based on its trial observation of the first hearing of 27 lawyers (hereafter “Ankara 27”) charged with professional misconduct on 9 May 2002 before No.1 Ankara Heavy Penal Court.
The Russian judiciary remains subject to executive, military and private influence and corruption. The lack of resources is so overwhelming that it prevents the judiciary from working properly. Defence lawyers are increasingly becoming the targets of police harassment.
