ICJ TRAINING ON EFFECTIVE USE OF UN HUMAN RIGHTS MECHANISM
The UN system of human rights protection has a range of instruments which are binding for States that are members of the UN or which are parties to specific instruments. Together they form a complex system of human rights protection which remains available for individuals who allege violations of their rights and those who defend them. Yet, these mechanisms often remain not sufficiently known by practitioners.

The prolonged and unlawful detention of Selahattin Demirtaş constitutes a serious breach of his human rights and represents a deepening of the rule of law crisis in Turkey. The Turkish authorities should release him from detention, drop the abusive criminal proceedings against him and refrain from weaponising the law to stifle the exercise of free expression in public debate.

The ICJ condemned the declaration of yet another state of emergency on Tuesday 24 May by the government of Hungary, and called on the government to desist from using it as a basis to undertake any measure that would further erode the already dismal state of rule of law in the country.

The ICJ submitted today written observations to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe denouncing the lack of structural independence of the Turkish judiciary and the abuse of its system of transfer of judges to undermine judges’ individual independence.
