The CIJL has been issuing reports on the attacks on judges and lawyers every year since 1989. Throughout the year, we gather information on issues related to the independence of the judiciary and legal profession around the world.
The 1985 UN Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary and the 1990 UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers guide our work in this regard. The CIJL presented the preliminary findings of this ninth edition of Attacks on Justice before the Fifty-fifth session of the UN Commission on Human Rights, which took place in Geneva from 22 March to 30 April 1999.
On 11 June 1999, the CIJL sent the draft chapter to each concerned government for comments.
