The ICJ today called on the government of Viet Nam to immediately return human rights defender Pham Chi Dung’s passport so he can travel to the United States to testify before Congress later this month.
The ICJ, OSCE and Group 484 are holding a training on migration and international human rights law starting on Monday 16 September in Zlatibor (Serbia).
The training has been organized by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Serbian NGO “Group 484” and will be given by the International Commission of Jurists. It will focus on detention of migrants and human rights; economic, social and cultural rights of migrants; and access to international human rights mechanisms, drawing from the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, of the UN human rights systems and from EU law. The training will be centered on the ICJ Practitioners Guide no. 6: Migration and International Human Rights Law.

The ICJ called on the UN Human Rights Council to request the Security Council to immediately refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court. Watch the webcast of ICJ’s statement.
As a matter of urgency, the Security Council should take other effective measures to protect civilians and address the humanitarian crisis in Syrian cities and villages, the ICJ urged. The ICJ delivered its oral statement on 17 September 2012 in the course of the general debate on situations requiring the Council’s attention, during the course of the 21st regular session of the Human Rights Council.

The ICJ, together with 21 other nongovernmental organisations, today participated in the 19th Annual Meeting of the Human Rights Council Special Procedures.
Following up on a joint NGO statement from the 18th Annual Meeting of the Special Procedures in 2011, the group of NGOs welcomed recent positive developments and raised certain issues for particular attention and discussion regarding the work and functioning of the Special Procedures.
