The ICJ and other human rights groups considers that “the draft resolution before the Council falls far short of what is needed”.
“If the Council adopts the resolution as it stands, it will have failed in its fundamental mission to advance the protection of human rights,” they fear.
The United Nations Human Rights Council today convened a special session on the situation of human rights in the Syrian Arab Republic.
By affirmative vote of 26 of the 47 members, the Council adopted a resolution on the human rights crisis in Syria.
While welcoming the content of the resolution, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) expressed regret that the Human Rights Council was unable to adopt a resolution on such a critical situation without consensus. The ICJ had called on the Council to take strong and unanimous action in response to the ongoing gross human rights violations committed by the Syrian security forces, including members of the Presidential guard and pro-regime militia.

Treaty-bodies have a special role in monitoring State compliance with human rights treaty obligations and providing guidance to States Parties on how to fulfil those obligations. The workshop afforded an occasion for in-depth examination and interaction between the committees on the impact that activities of transnational corporations have in the implementation of treaty obligations, providing a comparative and informed perspective on approaching these issues and encouraging coordinated action.
