Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada and the International Commission of Jurists welcome the Special Rapporteur’s report.[1] We agree that long-term “regression of… democratic space and civil and political rights and freedoms, interlinked with… monopolization of power” is the key issue.[2]
Amidst emerging threats to civic space, representatives from civil society called on Singapore’s Government to abide by its international legal obligations and commitments to respect fundamental freedoms in a Human Rights Council side event.
Today, the ICJ outlined the dire human rights and rule of law situation in Myanmar before the UN Human Rights Council during the interactive dialogue on the written update by the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The ICJ today urged the UN Human Rights Council and its Member States to work to ensure accountability for gross human rights violations and likely crimes against humanity committeed in Myanmar during the interactive dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.
The ICJ today called on UN Member States, before the Human Rights Council, to support the work of the International Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar and to actively identify possible fora for legal proceedings which could rely on evidence collected by the IIMM to help facilitate justice for the people of Myanmar.
