On 31 October the ICJ is co-sponsoring a side event with the Permanent Mission of France on “Respect the right not to be disappeared – Universal accession and implementation of the Convention against disappearances”.
This parallel event to the session of the Committee on Enforced Disappearance and the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances will take place at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Room XII, from 1 to 3 PM (13.00-15.00).

The ICJ is holding a workshop on access to justice and the right to fair trial from 22 to 24 October in Juba, South Sudan.
The workshop, organized in collaboration with the South Sudan Law Society, is aimed at judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and legal staff of the Ministry of Justice. It covers inter alia general fair trial standards, the role of the prosecutor and an independent legal profession, and specific standards applicable to arrest, pre-trial detention and trial proceedings. An ICJ delegation consisting of Judge Charles Mkandawire (ICJ Commissioner and Registrar of the SADC Tribunal), President Judge Anaclet Chipeta (High Court of Malawi), former Judge Thomas Masuku (High Court of Swaziland), Arnold Tsunga (ICJ Africa Regional Programme Director) and Ilaria Vena (CIJL Associate Legal Adviser) lead the training and debate sessions, together with representatives of the South Sudan Law Society.

The ICJ, OSCE and Group 484 are holding a training on migration and international human rights law starting on Tuesday 16 October in Kladovo (Serbia).
The training has been organised by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Serbian NGO “Group 484” and will be given by the International Commission of Jurists. It will focus on international protection of migrants and asylum seekers, the principle of non-refoulement, and human rights in expulsion procedures, drawing from the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights, of the UN human rights systems and from EU law. The training will be centered on the ICJ Practitioners Guide no. 6: Migration and International Human Rights Law.

Under the title “Urging States and private companies to meet their obligations”, the workshop is taking place from 14 to 17 October 2012 in Sion, Switzerland.
The ICJ is sponsoring this international seminar that will provide all stakeholders with a space to discuss businesses’ impacts on the rights of the child and the international obligations of States in this context, identify practices, instruments and models as well as relevant partners to work for the promotion of the rights of the child in the context of business activities.

On this occasion, the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty – of which ICJ is a member – will hold an interactive panel discussion in Geneva.
The discussion on “Abolition of the death penalty – Ten years of joint efforts” will take place at the Palais des Nations.
The event will gather activists from around the world to discuss and analyze, each with their own perspective, the progress made over the past decade and the remaining challenges to the fight against the death penalty.
Panelists include Ms. Emma Bonino, Vice-president of the Senate of the Republic of Italy; Mr. Renny Cushing, Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights; Ms. Ravdan Yanjmaa, Amnesty International Mongolia; and Mr. Fabian Omar Salvioli, Vice-Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee. Ms. Kyun-wha Kang, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, will open the discussion with a few remarks.

La Commissione Internazionale di Giuristi ed il Consiglio Italiano per i Rifugiati organizzano un seminario per giudici, giudici di pace ed avvocati sui principi di diritto internazionale applicabili all’espulsione o allontanamento dei migranti e richiedenti asilo.
Il seminario sarà suddiviso in due giornate:
La prima giornata (giovedì 20 settembre – 14:30 – 18:30) analizzerà la normativa e la giurisprudenza internazionale sul principio di non-refoulement o di non respingimento, la sua applicazione nella giurisprudenza italiana, assieme ad una prospettiva di diritto comparato con il sistema spagnolo.
La seconda giornata (venerdì 21 settembre – 14:30 – 18:30) analizzerà in maniera più dettagliata la normativa e la giurisprudenza internazionale in materia di rispetto delle misure provvisorie degli organismi internazionali. Tratterà inoltre del loro rispetto in Italia e della sospensione dell’espulsione in casi di non-refoulement attraverso esperti nazionali.
