(New York) – Nepal’s next government should prioritize amending and passing a transitional justice law that addresses the needs of victims who have waited over 16 years for truth and accountability, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said today. The law should meet all domestic and international legal obligations.
The ICJ today deplored the lack of public health preparedness in Nepal necessary to address the latest surge of transmission of the harmful, sometimes event fatal, dengue virus.
Education is a human right and not a commodity, and lawyers and judges are instrumental in ensuring the State fulfill its obligation to provide public education and to regulate private education providers.
“Judges should take concrete steps to break barriers that women are still facing in accessing justice and should play key role to ensure that courts are more gender responsive and women are able to access justice equally and without discrimination”.
The International Commission of Jurists is part of a group of 13 organizations that have issued a joint statement condemning the Sri Lankan authorities’ violent crackdown and increasing reprisals against peaceful protesters in Sri Lanka. This includes arrests, intimidation and the brutal attack on the protest camp in Colombo on 22 July 2022. The Sri Lankan authorities must ensure that security forces do not use excessive force and will respect the rights of peaceful protesters at the ‘Gotagogama’ site, which authorities have ordered to be vacated by 5:00 pm on 5 August 2022.
