The European Commission needs to improve its annual rule of law report and the process leading to it, in order to effectively address the rule of law breakdowns in some EU Member States, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said today. It joined 61 other organisations in a joint statement.

The ICJ called today on the Spanish Supreme Court to move expeditiously to revise and quash the conviction of Judge Baltasar Garzon for abuse of power and to reinstate him in the judiciary, after the UN Human Rights Committee found that the convictions in two trials against him were in breach of his fair trial rights.

The Tajikistan judicial authorities should drop disciplinary proceedings against a judge, initiated immediately after he issued a rare acquittal in a criminal case, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said today.
