Text of a lecture given by Justice Arthur Chaskalson, President of the International Commission of Jurists and Chair of the Eminent Jurists Panel at the Faculty of Law in Cambridge on Friday 11 May 2007, as the Seventh Sir David Williams Lecture.
The lecture was entitled: “The Widening Gyre: Counter-Terrorism, Human Rights and the Rule of Law”.

The ICJ called on the Ugandan authorities to respect the independence of the judiciary by ceasing the intimidation of judges and lawyers in proceedings related to the trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused.

The Council of the Kenyan Section of the ICJ appointed George Kegoro as the new Executive Director with effect from 15th January 2007.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Kegoro was the Chief Executive of the Law Society of Kenya between 1998 – 2006, where he was responsible for all matters of administration and financial management. Mr. Kegoro brings to the ICJ Kenya a wealth of experience in both administration and management of a member based organisation.
As the Executive Director Mr. Kegoro will be tasked with among other things, initiating policy proposals, initiating and developing project ideas, managing and coordinating the implementation of programmes and liaising with Government, NGOs and other collaborators on matters touching on the ICJ Kenya’s Mandate.
