The ICJ is delighted to announce that two new Commissioners were elected in December 2013: Justice Sir Nicolas Bratza (UK) and Professor César Landa (Peru).
Justice Sir Nicolas Bratza is a former President of the European Court of Human Rights. His term on the court ended on 31 October 2012, and he resigned as a Justice of the High Court on 1 November 2012.
Professor César Landa is the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Prior to this, Processor Landa was the President of the Constitutional Court of Peru. He also served as a Judge on the Constitutional Court.
In a year of significant change within the ICJ Commission, Justice Bratza and Professor Landa are the 14th and 15th new members to join the Commission in 2013.

Throughout its sixty-year history, the ICJ’s credibility has stemmed from its unique group of eminent jurists and legal experts: the ICJ Commission. ICJ Commissioners provide expert support and strategic direction to the ICJ Secretariat’s regional and thematic programmes.

The ICJ today expressed its heartfelt condolences at the passing away of Professor Vojin Dimitrijevic.
An international law expert and ICJ Commissioner, Vojin Dimitrijevic died at the age of 81 on 5th October 2012 in Belgrade.
He was the Director of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, serving in this position since the organisation’s foundation in 1995. Until 1998, he was also Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Belgrade Law School.
Professor Dimitrijevic was a member of the Presidency of the Civic Alliance of Serbia and former President of the Yugoslav Association for International Law. He was also a member of the Venice Commission for Democracy through Law and of the Institut de Droit International.
From 1982-1994, he was a member of the Human Rights Committee, serving as Rapporteur and Vice-Chairman at different stages during this time. He taught at many universities throughout the world and published numerous books and articles on human rights issues.
In 2001, he was bestowed the order of the Legion d’Honneur by the President of France, Jacques Chirac.
Vojin Dimitrijevic graduated with a PhD from the Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade. He was first elected as an ICJ Commissioner in 2003 and re-elected in 2008. He was also a member of the ICJ’s Executive Committee, serving in this role between 2006 and 2012.

It was with great sadness that the ICJ learned today of the passing of Professor Antonio Cassese who died this weekend at the age of 74 following a long fight with illness.
Professor Cassese was an Honorary Member of the ICJ having previously served as an ICJ Commissioner between 1995 and 2005. He was a distinguished figure in international justice, serving in a number of significant legal roles, and held the position of Professor of International Law at the University of Florence from 1975 until 2008.
