The convictions by the Emergency State Security Court (ESSC) of 30 defendants, 16 of whom are in custody, including members of the Egyptian Coordination for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF), solely for the lawful exercise of their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly must be quashed and those imprisoned must be immediately and unconditionally released, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said today.

Today, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Central Asia (ROCA) and the Nationwide Movement “Yuksalish,” in cooperation with the National Centre for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan, are holding an International Public Discussion on monitoring and coordination of implementation of the UN human rights treaties in Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is a party to most of the principal human rights treaties, but the UN Committees that review compliance of States with obligations those treaties have identified a number of shortcomings in the country’s implementation and have recommended what needs to be done ensure better compliance.

Today, the International Commission of Jurists, Amnesty International, the Global Initiative for Economic and Social Rights and Human Rights Watch published a joint public statement calling for a strengthening of human rights elements in the World Health Organization (WHO) Intergovernmental Negotiating Body’s Zero Draft of a Pandemic Treaty. The organizations are concerned that without such revisions, the Treaty aimed at addressing a compelling public health and human rights challenge, will not be fit for purpose in the protection human rights.
