Lawyer Al-Maleh to be tried by military judge

The ICJ addressed an intervention to the President of Guatemala expressing its concern about attacks on Roberto Romero, a lawyer for the Myrna Mack Foundation.
Mr Romero received death threats and his home was attacked by unknown individuals days before the re-opening of proceedings against military officers accused of ordering the murder twelve years ago of anthropologist, Myrna Mack.
The ICJ requested the Guatemalan Government to take necessary measures to guarantee the safety of all members of the Mack Foundation, including Mr Romero, and to ensure protection for all those involved in seeking justice in this case.
On 26 August, the High Court of Justice of Israel heard the beginning of oral arguments by lawyers for Kifah and Intisar Ajuri and Abdel Nasser Asida. The three petitioners are relatives of persons accused by Israel of having carried out acts of terrorism.
The ICJ is dismayed that Habib Issa, a Syrian lawyer and founding member of the Human Rights Association, was sentenced on 19 August to five years imprisonment by the Syrian Supreme State Security Court for – among other charges – attempting to change the constitution by illegal means.
The ICJ urges the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights to ensure that initiatives and measures taken by States to counter terrorism do not contravene or undermine human rights and principles of international law.
The ICJ urges Syrian authorities to end the harassment of a prominent human rights lawyer, Haythem Al-Maleh, whose only crime was the lawful and proper representation of an individual engaged in political opposition to the current regime.
