In 1986 the ICJ began a series of regional seminars at which participants would examine the norms being developed at the international level, discuss how these norms should be applied and adhered to in their regions, and make recommendations for their implementation.
The ICJ has urged the government of Malaysia to bring to trial or release the 91 persons now detained under the Internal Security Act.
Under the Act persons can be detained without charge or trial for indefinite renewable 60 day periods.
The ICJ visited Singapore to investigate and report on the detentions under the Internal Security Act of a total of 22 men and women accused of participating in a ‘Marxist conspiracy’ to overthrow the Singapore government.
The ICJ has sent today the a message to the Governor-General of Fiji, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau.
It says: “The International Commission of Jurists, which works to promote the Rule of Law and legal protection of human rights in all parts of the world, has been following with concern recent events in Fiji.
“It strongly supports your Excellency’s efforts to return Fiji to parliamentary democracy by lawful means.
“It is glad to note that the independence of the judiciary is being maintained, and supports the stand taken by the Fiji’s judges concerning the military coup and the abuse of Public Emergency Regulations by police and security forces.
“It welcomes and supports the action taken by the Fiji Law Society to uphold the Rule. It shares its concern about the abuses of emergency regulations and violations of individual freedoms, and has been relieved to learn that there has recently been a marked reduction in such violations.”
An International Mission of Jurists visited Singapore from 5 to 9 July 1987 to investigate the detentions under the Internal Security Act of twenty-two women and men accused of participating in a Marxist conspiracy.
