The ICJ’s Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers today welcomed the appointment of Mr. Leandro Despouy, from Argentina, as the new Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers.
The ICJ is please to announce the launch of the 2004 Martin Ennals Award. As a member of the jury for the Award, the ICJ supports the Martin Ennals Foundation’s call for nominations for the 2004 Award. The Award is granted annually to an individual, or exceptionally an organisation, in recognition of their commitment and ongoing endeavour in the defence and promotion of human rights.
We are pleased to announce the launch of the new ICJ Network Challenge Fund. The purpose of the fund is to help foster collaboration between members of the ICJ Network in the promotion and protection of human rights through the rule of law.
In accordance with international law, the ICJ urges the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights to further press for the regulation or prohibition of military courts.
This is essential for the proper administration of justice, respect of the right to fair trial and the eradication of impunity.
